What Is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is a service offering storage for your web pages and files. Consider a web hosting company as a landlord that rents physical space on their servers (Internet hardware systems) allowing web pages to be viewed on the Internet.

Most hosting plans include email plan and other support features. Let’s look at a few common terms in Web Hosting:

  • Disk Space
The amount of storage space on the server allocated into your account. The more disk space you have, the more files, web pages, and email you will be able to upload.
  • Bandwidth
The amount of data allowed to be transferred between your computer and server monthly. Consider bandwidth as a fuel for your vehicle. If your website runs out of its allocated bandwidth for that month, nobody will be able to visit it.
  • 99% Uptime Guarantee
Many web hosting companies promise a 99.9% uptime guarantee, which is roughly the equivalent to 45 minutes of downtime a month). This guarantee usually includes both network and server failures only. There may be server restarts, and other planned maintenance in any hosting environment, which may or may not be considered part of the “99% Uptime Guarantee”.
  • Domains Allowed
The number of domains allowed to be hosted within the same web hosting plan.
  • POP Accounts
Post Office Protocol (POP) refers to a system in the server that send and receive emails. The number of POP Accounts allowed in your hosting plan tells you the number of email accounts you can create using your domains, i.e. yourname@greatdomain.com.
  • Mail Forwarding
This refers to the setting mode which allows you to forward all your incoming emails to any email address you wish.
  • Auto Responders
An automatic setting mode for reply response to all of your incoming emails, that can be customized with a specific message.
