Chitchat: Phebe Rendulic

interview

Your Full Name
Phebe Rendulic

Tell us about you.
I’m a fashion and portrait photographer from Australia and last year I graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in Photography.

Phebe-Rendulic-ImageI love shooting with various types of film cameras, especially Polaroids and medium format. Apart from my photography I spend the other half of my time in an electro-pop band with my partner Harry, called Radio Spectacular!!!

When was the first time you fell in love with photography? And why?

Growing up I was given various different cameras to play around with and I’d snap away at pets and neighbours (not quite sure I was any good though hahah) but it was more recently when I met my partner who had a Polaroid camera that I really fell in love with photography. I was so excited by the whole process of taking a Polaroid image and it just grew from there!

Where are you located now?
Adelaide, Australia

What makes your works stand-out or different from other photographers?
I think everybody has their own unique style but I just hope that people are able to connect with my images in one way or another.

What motivates you?
The need to create the image I can see in my mind motivates me. Once I have something in my mind I become determined to do something about it.

How does working professionally differ from being an amateur in your opinion?
Sometimes dealing with high-maintenance clients can be one of the downfalls but really, how can you complain when you’re getting paid to do what you love!

If you could meet w/ any artist (one) past or present, whom would it be?
Marina Abramovic, the performance artist. I could quite happily spend a whole day following her around like a little lamb.

Who (or what) is your biggest influence?
Music is a huge inspiration to me, not just for my own music-making but for my photography also. Films like Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Virgin Suicides are a constant source of inspiration, those films are perfect.

What is your life moto?
Outwit, outplay, outlast … hahahah I love Survivor

Tell us several good online-resources for photographers you recommend visiting?
Not so much a resource but I spend a good chunk of time trawling tumblr for constant inspiration. Blogs like www.daydreamlily.com (for pretty pictures) and www.drivingadelorean.com (for awesome fashion editorials) are some that I check regularly.

Do you have a style that you relate to the most?
I do find myself drawn to the whole vintage, feminine aesthetic.

Can you offer any advice on how to build-up a portfolio / ‘getting your foot in the door’ for our readers wishing to start a career in this line of photography?
Get in contact with your favourite magazines, publications, blogs and share with them examples of your work for possible submissions. Having an online presence is basically what has gotten me published and featured over the years. Social networks like deviantArt, flickr and facebook are great for getting yourself out there.

Name 3 of your favorite (art/photography) books/ magazines.
Frankie, POP and Lula magazines.

Do you have anyone/company you would like to collaborate/work together?
I’d be happy to work with anyone really! Although, getting my work into my favourite magazines would be extremely wonderful!

What are the photography equipment(s) do you currently own?
I shoot digitally with a Nikon D90 and 50mm f1.8 lens as well as a 18-105mm lens. I have Polaroid SX-70 and 600 cameras and a bunch of cheap plastic 35mm and disposable cameras that I love using. I have medium format Ikon Zeiss and Holga cameras as well as a 35mm Canon EOS 3000N. I also like collecting old cameras that don’t take film I can get any more but I just like to look at them haha

Name 3 softwares (or tools) that you use the most, and tell us the function of each of them.
I use Lightroom to process a whole bunch of images from one shoot at a time and to edit the RAW data. Then I use Photoshop to tweak the images after. I’m not a big fan of overly edited images via airbrushing so I try to keep my pictures looking as natural as possible.
