Chitchat: Candace Brizard

interview

Your Full Name
Candace Brizard

Tell us about you.
I’m 25 years old. I’m currently studying in archives, records management, and photography techniques. Right now photography is a wonderful hobby of mine but I’d eventually like to become a professional photographer for National Geographic or some other large company.

Beer-meWhen was the first time you fell in love with photography? And why?
I first fell in love with photography in 1991-1992, when my mom lent me her camera. It wasn’t until my late teens that I was able to purchase my own DSLR. The entire process of capturing images on film fascinates me.

Where are you located now? Do you wish to be somewhere else at this moment, instead?
I’m currently located in Ottawa, Canada. At times I wish I could be somewhere in Europe or South America but then I remember how diverse my country is and I’m glad I’m here.

What makes your works stand-out or different from other photographers?
Every photographer (and all artists) have their own style, something unique to their work. I’m still in the process of discovering my own style but I constantly strive for better images in my own work. I’ll re-visit sites I’ve photographed in the past to strive for excellence in my work.

Have you heard/visited www.somethingwelike.com before? Do you have any inputs to make it better?
I haven’t previously heard of the site but I have browsed it this past week and found it to be an excellent site to discover new artists.

How does working professionally differ from being an amateur in your opinion?
Usually the professionals get paid for what they do. I also believe that professionals will strive to find that perfect location and timing for the perfect shot. A professional will wait for the perfect light to capture the desired emotion and an amateur will shoot the image and move on.

If you could meet w/ any artist (one) past or present, whom would it be?
Ansel Adams.

Who (or what) is your biggest influence?
I have several influences so I wouldn’t be able to specify just one but if I had to I’d have to say nature itself.

What do you wish for this new year?
I wish for good health and lots of travel opportunities. I’m usually happiest when I’m out backpacking.

Tell us several good online-resources for photographers you recommend visiting?
http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/?source=NavPhoHome – great for inspiration, contests, and articles
http://www.photography.com/ – great articles
http://www.snapsort.com – great for comparing gear, there’s also some good articles

Do you have a style that you relate to the most?

Not overly, but I do lean towards macro, nature, and travel photography though those aren’t really styles but rather types.

Can you offer any advice on how to build-up a portfolio / ‘getting your foot in the door’ for our readers wishing to start a career in this line of photography?
Keep shooting and never give up. Creating a portfolio is a must and it should only contain your best works, anywhere between 10-15 photographs. It’s hard to take any original shots nowadays but try to go for different perspectives rather than the typical shot that everyone else would photograph.

Name 3 of your favorite (art/photography) books/ magazines.
Photolife, Popular Photography, and Shutterbug.

Do you have anyone/company you would like to collaborate/work together?
National Geographic, Lonely Planet, Rough Guides. I’d like to work for any travel magazine, book, company, etc.

What are the photography equipment(s) do you currently own?
I use a Canon 50D with various lenses.

Name 3 softwares (or tools) that you use the most, and tell us the function of each of them.
Camera Raw – I use it to convert my images my RAW file to JPEG.
Photoshop CS4 – It can be used for a great variety of things, for photography I’ll use it to adjust the levels in my photographs.
Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 – I use this to add watermarks to my images and to remove dirt/dust that may be caught in an image (this can be done with Photoshop but I prefer this program, I find it easier to use)

If you have online portfolio, what is the URL?
