Optimism, Not Pessimism

Jennifer_Campbell_interview

Your Full Name
Jennifer Campbell

Tell us about you
I’m a sixteen year old girl, and art is my passion. All my life I’ve been artistic, be it playing music, painting, sketching or taking photographs, art keeps me going. I have so many dreams, and I cannot wait to succeed in life.

I’m a dog lover, book reader, coffee drinker, music listener, I live for creativity, and strive for perfection. I love my family more than anything, and I’m a sucker for a nice cold beer ;)

Jennifer_Campbell_photoIn your opinion, what would be the secret ingredients to become a great photographer?
I think the key ingredients to become successful in this industry are: passion, determination, creativity and a strong head. It’s a crazy world to be involved in, so you need to be able to cope with anything.

Where are you located?
I live in Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom.

What would be your most rewarding experience becoming a photographer so far?
Becoming a photographer has opened up a whole new dimension for me. I see things differently, I appreciate life more, and I’ve found many good friends along the way.

Where do you get inspirations from?
I get inspired by the littlest things, I look through fashion magazines, I browse the internet and find amazing photos, and music sparks off my imagination. But I am mostly inspired by dreams.

How do you promote/ sell/ showcase your work?
I promote my art through the internet on art related websites like DeviantART and Flickr, and Modelmayhem is a great site to get work off, I am currently in discussion for a big project :)

Define the word “beauty”
I really appreciate human beauty, but for me, beauty is not perfect skin, flawless faces or Elle Macpherson bodies, it’s just the genius of this planet, and how we are all alive and safe despite what the world has been through. We are a strong species, the human race.

What types of assignment/ project are you attracted the most? Why so?
I love fashion photography but more importantly I love the creative work that goes into it. For me, a photograph isn’t art unless it’s unique and had a lot of effort gone into it.

Who is a photographer that you look up to? Why so?
I adore Camilla Akrans’ work. She’s an inspiration for me because of her style of art, and I also admire Paola Kudacki, Felice Fawn, Tim Walker and David Byun.

Describe a difficult work/ project situation and how would you overcome it?
A difficult situation could be when you plan something with a model for months, but then they cancel on you last minute. My solution to that is: have back-up models who are willing to do the work if the original model won’t be available.  But don’t ask me ;)

What do you think about the Internet and how it is affecting the visual communication business?
I think the internet is bittersweet really. It’s a good place for networking and arranging work, inspiration and at the same time it restricts some people from socializing normally. But times change, so do we.

If you could turn back time, how would you do things differently?
I would have stayed in school, and not chosen the option of home tuition. I am eternally grateful for the years and effort my gran put in to teaching me, and I had some of the best times of my life, but I regret it because it’s made it harder for me to make friends.

How does the global economic recession affecting the industry, or the least affecting your business/ work?
The recession hasn’t affected my work, because I haven’t really had much yet! But It did affect my home life, like everyone else.

Name 3 of your favorite (art) books/ magazines
Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar. I’m an addict, I buy them all every month!

What is your life motto?
Optimism, Not Pessimism.

What does “photography” mean to you?
Photography for me means art. I don’t like seeing people (men) claiming to be ‘professional photographers’ who just take demeaning photos of young girls aspiring to be page three girls. It disgusts me, they only do it for the money and…they probably get their kick out of it.

What do you like the sound of? Why so?
I love the sound of a piano, even if its a nonsense tune, it just relaxes me. I love rain as well, I fall asleep faster if it’s raining.

If you have online portfolio, what is the URL?
I don’t have an actual website yet, but my portfolio is http://www.jenipho.deviantart.com

Glad to see you there my dear,

You have always been an inspiration to me, and your words that I now discover into that interview really speaks to me.

It’s really nice, I love everything you say, I really recognize myself in your answers.

You will go far Jeni, I’m sure that soon you will be able to see your own pictures when you will buy Vogue, Elle or Harper’s Bazaar.

Wish you all the best,
Alexandra Sophie
