Crucial Branding

about: LISA SLOTSVE
I am a High School Senior and Children’s photographer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Originally from a small town on the plains of North Dakota, my personal voyage and passion of photography began when my father gave me his SLR to calm my fear while flying around the ND plains in our small plane. After earning a degree in Public Relations/Advertising and pursuing my Masters in Business and Marketing Education at the University of Minnesota, I worked in Pharmaceutical sales before launching my Children’s photography business in 2006.
My love of fresh, fun, and unique images along with creative design have grown the business into a very successful Children’s Photography Studio in Minnesota. My work has been featured in Everyday with Rachel Ray Magazine, international book covers sold at Barnes and Noble, The Japan Times, and various boutiques and modeling agencies in Minneapolis. I am a wife and adore time with my family, drinking coffee, shopping and making time to enjoy best picture of all–the journey in front of us!
What’s one thing you wish you knew when you started your career?
How important branding and design are. I was not a professional photographer when I started to get asked by local magazines and clothing boutiques to shoot their products and clients (they had “seen” me through personal work I had done) so I quickly came up with a name and had a logo designed without much thought. About 5 months into my journey, and the start of a wonderful and busy photography business I realized that my name and brand did not convey “who” I was.
I reverted to using my name and a simple modern new logo. I wish I had known that your logo is your identity and brand and had not had to change that important part of my business. Fortunately, I learned that lesson early on, not at the start..as I wish now, but early enough that my current brand is what is known and recognized.
