giles_timms_interview
about: GILES TIMMS

I’m originally from a small seaside town, called Burry Port, in Wales, UK. But I’ve lived in the states now for a number of years. I currently live in LA and have been attending UCLA for the past 3 years. I’m waiting to go before my thesis committee at UCLA, so I’ll be graduating this quarter. I’m also working freelance.

If you have a bachelor degree/education background; what is it?
I’m graduating this quarter from UCLA with an MFA in Animation from UCLA’s Department of Theater, Film and Television.

Where are you located?
I live in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, in cycling distance to the beach.

Tell us about this movie you made, titled “Dead All Along”. What was the message behind it?
No matter how lost we may feel at times, we can always find a way back to what’s important.

Would you explain a bit about the process of creating the movie? What were the challenges and how you went around it?
I think the hardest challenge of this project was creating a story for a 2-minute song. But it was a great exercise to focus on the essential story elements that drive the plot.

What would be your strangest assignment you have done? Why so?
Sadly I don’t think I’ve had a really strange assignment…but maybe that’s a good thing :)

Describe how you feel at the starting of a new project
Excited by all the possibilities yet to be explored.

How do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Creating worlds, images and stories that I’m passionate about.

Could you share any insight for people just entering the field?
Don’t give up – persevere, work hard and find the things you love in art, and life.

Who is the person you look up to in this industry? Why so?
Well, there are quite a few people who inspire me on a regular basis both artistically and philosophically. But, of the people with whom I interact and know, it’s a much smaller list:

  • Bill Barminski – I was very fortunate to have Bill as an instructor at UCLA. He’s an awesome artist and a great guy. I was also lucky enough to work with him and his studio, Walter Robot, on the ‘Grapevine Fires’ animated music video for Death Cab for Cutie. I learned a ton working with him on that project. Bill has also been very generous with advice as I start out on my own.
  • Ceri Frost – A terrific composer and artist, Ceri’s work always inspires me. He’s also amazing to collaborate with as he’s very trusting and respects the creative process.

How do you overcome creative block?
Read, watch movies, listen to music, draw, go to the beach, cycle, comics, look at art and play board games.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when beginning this passion?
That it’s 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.
