about: MARTYNA ADELA DZIEKAN (INDIAE)
Well, I am addicted to my camera by 2.5 years from my 19 years old life. Now I am mostly interested in portraiture and I would like to develop in fashion photography, but in the start of my adventure, I was taking pictures of mostly everything. I am addicted (what I know because nowadays I am rarely shooting and feel bad about it) but it doesn’t mean photography is the only thing in my existence.
I don’t like to limit myself and I am very indecisive at the same, it’s important to try everything – but not in the sex-drugs-and-rock-and-roll meaning – both digital and analogue cameras, sometimes black and white sometimes saturated colors, being commercial and alternative, everything has a mixed blessing.
This year I started education in Jagiellonian University to study history of art. At the same time I want to have opportunity to cooperate with interesting people and get as much skills as it is possible.
If you are represented by an artist management company or have an affiliation or own a production company for your portfolio, what company is it?
No.
Where are you located?
At the moment, I live in Kraków, Poland. It’s about 350kms from the place I come from (Lower Silesia).
What do you do when you are not taking pictures?
Everything else, dreaming, admiring photography, listening to music, meeting people, sleeping. I should be leaning also, but I’m very unsystematic.
What drove you to become a photographer?
Coincidence. And then it became kind of addiction. Addiction to thinking about next photo shoots, locations, ideas and addiction to feeling which surround photo sessions.
Tell us about your photography style and the creative process behind it?
If it comes to whole process, I am very unprofessional (Marta, one of my lovely models, can claim that) and indecisive. At the beginning of taking pictures I am rather unsatisfied because the results hardly correspond with my imagination. But after a while they are a little more interesting. I try almost everything which comes to my mind and is possible to find some kind of way for myself in photography. I do not have enough experience to have my own style.
How do you promote/sell/showcase your work, if any of them are for sale?
Mostly in the Internet. If it comes to selling works, I don’t have so much experience.
What’s your way(s) to balancing work and life?
No special philosophy, because I am not a professional photographer. I shot when I have time, idea and people to realize what come to my mind.
Could you share any insight for people just entering the profession?
Making as much as possible, not fearing challenges, new things or even the craziest ideas.
Who is the person that you look up to in the photography world? Why so?
David LaChapelle, because he is so versatile. Terry Richardson’s style of working always impressed me, the fact that he works with the simpliest tools is emphasizing that there is no must of having the best cameras and lenses to make an interesting shot. On the other hand, I love sensitive way of showing people – mostly boys – of Hedi Slimane. For me, his works are very emotional, he made his models seems very fragile, pensive.
I need to mention Jonathan Jacobsen (www.loganart.deviantart.com), because he is so young and outstanding, his art gives a feeling like you are inside the mind which made the pictures, Martin Stranka (www.strany.deviantart.com) and his unique, very symbolical style and Monika Stojak (www.monislawa.deviantart.com) – one day that girl will make fashion photography world upside down.
What music are you listening lately?
There is a lot to mention. Lately there is mainly Depeche Mode, White Stripes & the Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys. And always Patrick Wolf, Devendra Banhart, Placebo, Late of the Pier and Klaxons. I can talk about the music all the time.
Name 3 your favorite books.
“Lubiewo” by Michał Witkowski, everything by Etgar Keret and “White and Red” written by Dorota Masłowska.
What do you like the smell of?
I like the smell of jalapeno pepper, oregano or anything associating with food I like. Smell of house when I’m frying chips. And Miss Dior Cherie.
If you have online portfolio (website/awards/credits/client’s showcase), what is the URL?
You can see my work on www.indiae.deviantart.com, but I’m finally thinking about more adult portfolio.
