Chitchat: Rupert Hitchcox

rupert-hitchcox-interview
Your Full Name.

Rupert Hitchcox

Tell us about you.
OK where do I start, – have been taking photos since I was 8 years old when my great uncle brought me a  Fuji 110 film camera, then a very vivid red Konika POP.  When I was 15 my father gave me his old Minolta XD7 to do my GCSE and I’ve been photographing pretty solidly since then.

I have an HND in screen printing, then London College of printing I then went to Hong Kong where I found my self gravitating towards graphic design working for companies such as Arco Chemical and Disney, I was there from 95 – 97 we worked hard and partied harder, it was a great time.

While I was living there I spent 4 months doing the backpacker trail round Thailand and Malaysia. In April 97, I went to live in Australia for eight years until 2004.

While there I got my degree in multimedia design, and got to work on some interesting projects, the most memorable was being one of the camera men for the first crossing of the Sydney Harbour bridge by a horse drawn carriage in 20 years for the Discovery Channel.

I returned to the UK in 2004 where I set up a company The Artistic Network Limited www.theartisticnetwork.com to promote artists and give artists a platform to sell their work commission free.  I also started getting more heavily back into my photography, while working for Apple Retail on the creative team and gaining my certification as Aperture Apple Professional.

If you are represented by an artist management company or have an affiliation or own a production company for your portfolio, what company is it?
[I currently work alone but am open to offers].  I currently work in technology and freelance in photography.

Where are you located?
London, England

What do you do when you are not taking pictures?
I work for Apple on the creative team.

What drove you to become a photographer?
When I was 7 years old, I was amazed by this photograph my father took of a geyser erupting but the bubble had not burst, it’s just a dome of water rising out of the ground, in Iceland.  The fact you could capture something like that, capturing that amazing moment forever blew my mind. I have yet to see a similar photo.

Tell us about your photography style and the creative process behind it?
I capture what I see around me, I have a couple of subtle techniques I use to get really intermate shots but without disturbing the moment, like the Kiss and Embrace, I’ve trained my self to shoot without looking through the view finder like the work of Garry Winogrand.

How do you promote/sell/showcase your work, if any of them are for sale?
I have some work on several sites, but I’m in the process of overhauling my personal site, visionsofthem.com, which will become my main site, I don’t promote my self as such currently but all that will change in the new year when my new site should be up and running. Most of what I do at the moment is personal and requested work.

What’s your way(s) to balancing work and life?
Photography is my passion, but I make sure I have my own goals and agenda’s as well as doing other work, so I do what inspires me as well as what is required of me.

Could you share any insight for people just entering the profession?
Practice, there is so much information out there now, I see these courses that charge thousands and I tell people don’t bother, OK you can get contacts, but really all you have to do is practice. The only formal certification I have is my GCSE and some modules from university.

Who is the person that you look up to in the photography world? Why so?
This is a tough one, there are so many inspiring photographers it all depends on the subject matter really, meeting Constantine Manos and David Alan Harvey and Stuart Franklin of Magnum Photos has had a profound effect on my documentary work, they were so inspirational.

What music are you listening lately?
A Real cross section from The xx to Eskimo Joe and Florence and the Machine

Name 3 your favorite books.
O.k I have confession I don’t read books I have this form of dyslexia that makes it nigh impossible to read long lines of text but I read magazines by the truck load. So I will list three magazines, Focus, Hot shoe and Aperture, among others.

What do you like the smell of?
Coffee it’s got to be coffee! I’m addicted to the stuff, just  a classic morning smell. New beginnings, people always seem to be thinking or talking over coffee.
