Jose_Mendoza_interview

Your Full Name
Jose Carlo Mendoza

Tell us about you
Im still one of those artist that are working hard  to get notice and also continuing to practice different types of media, as well as mastering it.I never been into any Art school.I’m currently practicing on painting with water color, i kinda want to make it look like it is made from color pastel or oil paints.I’m also into sculpting using polymer clays.I sculpt fantasy creatures..

If you have a bachelor degree/education background; what is it?
I’m a high school graduate..when i was in college i took up Physical Therapy but don’t able to finish it.

Jose_Mendoza_photo02Where are you located?
I am here at San Pablo City, Laguna, Republic of the Philippines

What do you do when you are not producing artwork?
I read to get inspired, listen to music…I love to watch the crowd..basically to be more familiar how it goes with the shadowing and anatomy..

What drove you to become an illustrator?
I dunno exactly..I started to draw when I was 3 years old…maybe it’s because there are lots of cartoons during the 80’s and the comics industry really blooms that time and that my mom, aunt and uncles basically loves comics,I’m kinda mesmerized with all this illustrations that i wanted to try it if i can also make it..

How do you promote/sell/showcase your work?
Right now I don’t have my own studio..so I show them online and soon people will ask if it’s for sale…honestly i dunno how to promote my works..I am really green when it comes to that aspect..I wish there are also agents for artists like me haha

Do you work better at night or in the morning? Why?
At night!!! Definitely at night…Philippines is a tropical island and it happened that I’m better creating art pieces at cool temperature…and I guess it’s really quiet at night time…

What is your strength as an illustrator compared to others in the industry?
I guess it’s the realism and details..I’m really a perfectionist at that aspect.

What do you think about the Internet and how it is affecting the visual communication business?
Internet is really a big help especially on promoting/showing works..and those illustrations that don’t need to be shipped, you just have to scan it and send it to your client or colorists..and it helps those companies especially new companies to search for new artists..

If you can only draw one object for the rest of your life, what object would that be? Why?
That’s a very hard questions…i guess it’s Marilyn Monroe..I’m always fascinated with her..her charm that’s magical..it’s really rare for a celebrity to have that..and also she’s one of the misunderstood persons in classical Hollywood..

How does the global economic recession affecting the industry, or the least affecting your business/ work?
Oh affecting a lot…because i have to cheapen my fee yet still has the same quality…yeah it would be a lie if i say it’s really the same quality..and really affecting the number of commission pieces..but in the end of the day it just adds more techniques or ideas on how to keep up with the competitions..

Name 3 of your favorite (art) books/ magazines.
Oh books…books of barrington barber..there are sets of his books from fundamentals for figure drawings to landscapes to portraits..as for magazine…air brush magazine..

What do you like the sound of? Why so?
Sound of birds in early morning…i dunno but it just reminds of positive things in life as you can see in their own little lives..and also the sound of water..it’s really relaxing and ease up when my mind is kind of tight up on choosing between several ideas or concept..
