Chitchat: Jib Peter
Your Full Name
Jib PETER
Tell us about you.
I am a French author photographer, only using analog conventional material.
When was the first time you fell in love with photography? And why?
I was about 8 years old when my teacher invited a photographer to introduce his job (shooting and development lab). At the end of the day the photographer congratulated me, I was so proud. Then I knew I wanted to do this job until I quitted university (studies that bored me) to focus entirely on photo, without knowing a thing.
Where are you located now?
I live in the country in Burgundy, France.
What makes your works stand-out or different from other photographers?
I don’t have the feeling, the intention or the pretention to reinvent photography. I’m not the right person to answer this question.
What motivates you?
The ability to create a small « parallel universe » with basic things, if possible. I love inventing stories
How does working professionally differ from being an amateur in your opinion?
The main advantage of being a professional photographer is that I can devote all my time to the photographical research. The advantage of being an amateur is that you haven’t got the same financial pressure.
If you could meet w/ any artist (one) past or present, whom would it be?
In fact, I would not really meet the people I fancy. I prefer maintaining the myth. Among them Sally Mann, Stephan Vanfleteren, Quinn Jacobson, Elliot Erwitt, Josef Hoflehner, James Nachtwey, Antoine d’Agata, Chaplin, Edward Hopper and many other more or less famous people.
Who (or what) is your biggest influence?
I would say US independent movies.
What is your life moto?
Not becoming passively absorbed by a quite weird reasoning society.
Tell us several good online-resources for photographers you recommend visiting?
I found a lot of photographers on flickr, artlimited and deviantart.
Do you have a style that you relate to the most?
I think I am mainly influenced by the idea I have of independent US movies and for the rendering, I am very sensitive to the very first photographical and film making testimonies (i.e. what was done at the beginning of last century).
Can you offer any advice on how to build-up a portfolio / ‘getting your foot in the door’ for our readers wishing to start a career in this line of photography?
That’s not easy as I still haven’t the answer for me. But when you start form scratch you must expect to face many difficulties, being very patient and passionate.
Name 3 of your favorite (art/photography) books/ magazines.
Réponse photo, reporter sans frontières, photo poche.
Do you have anyone/company you would like to collaborate/work together?
Let’s dream a little… the Cohen brothers, Sonic Youth, Deltahead, The tallest man on earth, and also all the people fighting to make our societies more human.
What are the photography equipment(s) do you currently own?
I use a Nikon F5, an Hasselblad 503Cxi and an Holga.
Name 3 softwares (or tools) that you use the most, and tell us the function of each of them.
Dimage scan and Epson scan (to scan films and shootings) Picasa and photoshop.
