Your Full Name.

Frank Sauer

Tell us about yourself and what you are currently doing/working on exactly?
I am a director, designer and animator with 3 years of commercial experience. At the moment I´m still working on my first feature film “1000Tode” (”A Thousand Deaths”).

If you have a bachelor degree/education background; what is it?
I just graduated as a Master of Media Direction in the field of film at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt.

Where are you located?
Located in Darmstadt (Germany) near Frankfurt.

As a creative person in many different art forms, do you consider yourself as one particular artist in a specific discipline over the others? Which would that be?
During my studies I fell in love with graphic design and animation trying to create impressive and most importantly beautiful imagery. When I started to work in an experimental way in the fields of photography and film I realized that it was much more fun to capture authentic emotions and put them in a certain context. The next projects will definitely combine film and animation.

Explain your creative process in a project? What are usually the challenges and how you go around it?
There is a new project, often a certain aim to be achieved and a lot of existing projects I like. This is the moment where I try to let go, stop looking at all my inspirational material and try to do something different.

What would be your strangest assignment you have done? Why so?
I created a kind of digital flipbook that was seperated into three parts – head, body, legs. Everytime you flip it a new weird creature is created. The imagery was absolutely disturbing in a sexual way. Never really worked out – looked like a porn but nobody wanted to look at. I think it´s the worst thing that can happen to a porn.

Describe how you feel at the starting of a new project?
Excited – every time.

How do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Ask me in 5 years.

Could you share any insight for people just entering the field?
Follow your dreams and don’t be an asshole.

Who is the person you look up to in this industry? Why so?
Sebastian Linda inspired me to do my first feature film. He is releasing the feature film “Born To Skate” that captures the feeling of skateboarding in a complete different way. http://www.myspace.com/borntoskatethemovie

How do you overcome creative block?
Release your creative block with sex. If there is nobody to have sex with, go out and do some sport.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when beginning this passion?
Don’t get lost in other people’s work.
