Chitchat: Filippo Chiesa

filippo_chiesa_interview
about: FILIPPO CHIESA

I’m a Director – D.o.P. – Editor (one man band). At the moment I’m working on two comercials and on November I’ll work like a D.o.P. on a feature film in Italy.

If you have a bachelor degree/education background; what is it?
I studied like a dentist but it was not my job. I work in the film industry since 1995.

Where are you located?
I live in Parma, Italy.

Tell us about this movie you made, titled “My School”. What was the idea behind it originally?
It’s a tribute. Vittorio Emanuele II building, was first a boys orphanage and after one of the biggest Junior High School for boys and girls in Parma, the town where I live. Many children lived and studied there.

filippo_chiesaWould you explain a bit about the process of creating the movie? What were the challenges and how you went around it?
I decided to make this short the day before the explosion, so there was no storyboard, no planning, etc., there was only a last minute idea.

What would be your strangest assignment you have done? Why so?
The strangest one is surely “Le Cirage Berluti” (New York City 2005). It’s a funny/crazy ritual where, very rich persons, clean their expensive Berluti shoes with the best Champagne.

Describe how you feel at the starting of a new project?
As many musicians are impatient to go on the stage, I’m impatient to go on the set, so normally I’m very fast when I plan a job (when it’s possible).

How do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I really don’t know!

Could you share any insight for people just entering the field?
On-line, there are a lot of interesting tutorials, articles, videos, etc. For me, internet, is a great inspiration.

Who is the person you look up to in this industry? Why so?
I love Aki Kaurismaki, he is my favourite Director. His films are always ironic and at the same time, poetic. You can see an Aki Kaurismaki film without audio.

How do you overcome creative block?
My mind is always on, but it’s hard to have good ideas in every project. To overcome a creative block, I work late at night (no noise, no meetings, no phone calls, etc..).

What’s one thing you wish you knew when beginning this passion?
The real important one: CONTROL + S  = SAVE in my first editing software.

If you have online portfolio (website/awards/credits/client’s showcase), what is the URL?
