Your Full Name
Becky Dreistadt!
Tell us about you
I’m a comic illustrator and painter from Virginia!
In your opinion, what would be the secret ingredients to become a great illustrator?
Finding work that inspires you.
Where are you located?
New Zealand right now!

What is the most fascinating part of being an illustrator?
Learning new things and sharing my work with others.
Where do you get inspirations from?
Seeing great animated films, reading wonderful books and comics and researching new & talented artists.
How do you promote/ sell/ showcase your work?
I attend a lot of comic conventions, I have printed portfolios to show to people, a Deviantart portfolio and an online comic website, where I sell shirts and merchandise based on my work.
What is your long range goals in your life?
I’d really like a backyard and a dog to put in it.

What types of assignment/ project are you attracted the most? Why so?
I really enjoy working with my partner Frank on comics.
Who is an illustrator that you look up to? Why so?
Mary Blair. I like her compositions, colors, stylising and designs.
Describe a difficult work/ project situation and how would you overcome it?
Deadlines are the hardest, I generally fix that by not sleeping. Sometimes projects fall apart and you just have to accept it sometimes. Some parts of life are beyond our control.
What do you think about the Internet and how it is affecting our lifestyle?
I love the Internet, it’s the greatest research tool and it is the only way I have really been able to get any work at all.
If you could turn back time, how would you do things differently?
If I could turn back time, I would be a wizard and that would be pretty fantastic. I would probably use my powers for things other than time travel, perhaps saving baby animals.

How do you keep your work fresh? Do you need to consciously adapt your style or does it progress naturally?
Occasionally other artists inspire new techniques and evolutions in my style, but it has been pretty natural.
Name 3 of your favorite (art) books/ magazines.
At this very second: Bagel’s Lucky Hat by Dave Cooper, Richard Scarry’s Best Story Book Ever and Blacksad (French comic!)
What is your life motto?
This is specifically about cloth tigers in Chinese culture. It’s about making unrealistic art, which is what I like to make: “Unworthy to be similar in shape, worthy to be similar in spirit”. I saw this quote about a week ago.
In what kind of a work environment do you do your best work?
I can get a lot of work done in cafes, but I like my home studio.
What do you like the sound of? Why so?
Right now, I like The Rat Pack. Wind scares me.
