Chitchat: Alphan Yilmazmaden

interview

Your Full Name
Alphan YILMAZMADEN

Tell us about you.
Born in ancient times, educated as an engineer and still working in this field. With the digital age back to photography as an amateur. I attend some lectures and seminars about portrait photography, documentary photography. I like street photography, portraits and landscapes. Trying to express something about life and human, believe in learning is eternal.

avatarWhen was the first time you fell in love with photography? And why?
Fell in love photography, really good description. It is started too early with admiring my elder’s shots. “I should learn this magic” I said. I start with film cameras but it was not possible to continue because of many reasons. Than digital cameras came in to market and this made it possible to continue with the magic.

Where are you located now?

Istanbul/TURKEY

What makes your works stand-out or different from other photographers?
Comments to may photos in general are telling that, my photos’ moods are natural, if there is a difference this it.

What motivates you?
If one can read my photo in a way that I shoot it, this is a motivation.

How does working professionally differ from being an amateur in your opinion?
I feel as an amateur more flexible and free. Even to win a prize in a competition may harm this freedom of you. An amateur may speak slowly but speaks every time for himself.

If you could meet w/ any artist (one) past or present, whom would it be?
Gustav KLIMT

Who (or what) is your biggest influence?
Streets, the life it self and great photographers as such Bresson, Koudelka, Ara Güler, Bressai …

Do you have a style that you relate to the most?
I am trying to be a good street photographer.

Can you offer any advice on how to build-up a portfolio / ‘getting your foot in the door’ for our readers wishing to start a career in this line of photography?
A portfolio is a proof that you are shooting not on coincidences but on conscious. A portfolio should be a reflection of you as well.

Another Way of Telling (1982)
A Seventh Man (1975)

What are the photography equipment(s) do you currently own?
For a long time I am a “Nikon” user. Currently I use a Nikon D 300 body.
I prefer not to use “zoom” lenses. I am using following lenses :
- Nikon AF, 20mm f 2.8
- Nikon AF, 24 mm f 2.8
- Nikon AF 50mm f 1.4
- Nikon AF 60mm f 2.8 (micro)
- Nikon AF, 105mm f 2.0 (Defocus Control)
- Lensbaby for Nikon,
My favorite lens is Nikon AF, 105mm f 2.0 (Defocus Control)
Additionally I use AF extension tubes and Nikon SB 800

Name 3 softwares (or tools) that you use the most, and tell us the function of each of them.
I use Nikon Capture NX and Photoshop CS and my favorite plug-in is Nikcolor Silver Effex. Capture NX is working very well with my Nikon Body. Since I shot as RAW, I can easily see the correct colors of image and implementation of necessary adjustments are easy and effective. I use Photoshop CS for more detailed editing. Nikcolor Silver Effex is an excellent toll for converting the images to the B/W. Wide range of adjustments/controls are assisting to reach good results.

If you have online portfolio, what is the URL?
I share my photos online in many web sites; here is the one address that you can access my photos: http://arslanalp.deviantart.com/
