Chitchat: Pablo Santander Tiozzolyon

interview

Your Full Name
Pablo Santander Tiozzolyon

Tell us about you.
Actualy I’m comic book artist, skilled in various kind of media (I came from theater) who search diferent projects to express all my nightmares and visions (better if I can live of my art)…

In your opinion, what would be the secret ingredients to become a great illustrator?
Besides the passion and the natural talent, this must to be educated, learn from good mentors, show your work, to be open to critics, work hard and before the technique its to be unique, search a personal universe and develope it.

Where are you located?
Actually Santiago, Chile (where I’m living)

What is the most fascinating part of being an illustrator?
A self discovering, create and share the visions, give inspiration and comunicate.

Where do you get inspirations from?
Before all, music, dreams, spirits, persons that I meet, old stories…

Do you promote/ sell/ showcase your work? If so, how?
I’m not so skilled for self promotion and I haven’t an agent so I post my work in my gallery and site web and I sell my ilustrations in some signature tours of my books or open for commissions…I guess I realy need an agent…

What is your long range goals in your life?
Besides live thanks to my artwork, like I said before; exorcist my nightmares, try to have a comunication with the watcher or reader, like the poets as a prophet…

blind

What types of assignment/ project are you attracted the most? Why so?
Overmore, where I can be free to express my ideas, nightmare and daydreams, I would like to be allowed to show concepts, mix styles; the teather it’s a good space of expression, or the desing, but with the comic book I can tell stories, with living beings in living worlds, indeed I love the stories with light and shadows, “magic realism” could be story for children, historic or erotic, but playing with the mistery; I think Jean Giraurd find the solution working in the serie “Blueberry” that give him the posibility to create his alter ego Moebius.

Who is an illustrator that you look up to? Why so?
There’s a lot of illustrators that I admire, my ideal is William Blake (writer and illustrator of their own books) for me it’s a prophet, who concive the spirit and the flesh as the same; for actual artists, for example, I love the work of James Jean and Claudio Romo (chilean), a very personal style, huge univers and a great technique, I would like to go further like them.

Describe a difficult work/ project situation and how would you overcome it?
The comic book serie “Bruxelles Metropole” is the most difficult project I’ve ever been involved, besides the “pre production” until the approval for the serie (almost 6 months), I had to develope better my french (the writer only speak french) take a trip to Belgium every two years, the financial cost and investment in documentation (I came back in every trip with a lot of books leaving all my clothes in Europe), overcome the diference of cultures, change my method of work, for other where every path of the creation its controled, etc, and seek to be faithful with the spirit of the city and the belgium readers, for disgrace, the distance doesn’t let me participate in promote tour of the book, except in 2008 in some belgium towns, during the creation of the books I passed for floods and one earthwquake too.

At the end I tried to link my memories with the “memories” of the city and (if could be posible) of the country, creating “fake memories” of my past, in another continent, in another century, searching details in common, like when I was student in a catholic school creating by belgium priest, and how I learned french with Pilote and Spirou magazine in these years. In other aspect the colour of Bruegel or Rembrant helps a lot; even if for me is not a “personal” work (its like work for “Blueberry” of Charlier) we have been involved in this series as if it were the most personal expression of our life.

What do you think about the Internet and how it is affecting our lifestyle?
Internet saves me (gigles), has allowed me to contact other persons with the same interest (music, painters…) and offered me the posibility to show my ilustration and concretize dreams as to work in a serious comic book serie, project that give me the posibility of live; I can keep the comunication with my friends and artist that I admire, to have a feedback.

If you could turn back time, how would you do things differently?
I would like to learn architecture, music and finish theater and defenitly, I will tried to don’t work with relatives or in family bussines.

How do you keep your work fresh? Do you need to consciously adapt your style or does it progress naturally?
As autodidact, I’m trying to be open to every estimulation; In the past I tried to have the space to modified my style for every kind of work, in 1983 I forced me to draw like Hugo Pratt, but at the end I realised that this was a style “close”, that reduce my posibilities of expression, so, when I was student of theater, I forced again my hand for to be free, now, I’m still open but now developing my own “languaje”, for this reason, my favorite source its the music.

Name 3 of your favorite (art) books/ magazines.
Where I live, it’s hard to get art magazines (maybe “Connaisance des art”), but I like two of the few that I know: Juxtapoz, Hi Fructose; but about the old ones, I really like the french magazine “Planete”; about art books that I love these of Tachen editions, like “The symbolists”

What is your life motto?
Survive (gigles)…sublime demons, create

In what kind of a work environment do you do your best work?
Clean, sunlight, good music and (if is posible) in good company in a nice proper place.

What do you like the sound of? Why so?
Besides some of my favorite singers; rain, children’s laugh, the warm wind from the mountains through the pine’s pins…all these reminds me a big part of my childwood living near at the mountains…
