For more than two decades artist David Mecalco has sold hand-painted devotional images (retablos) from a stall in Mexico City’s La Lagunilla Sunday antiques fair (commonly referred to as the Thieves’ Market).
In recent years these vibrant works—pulsing with images of the Virgin Mary, the devil, skeletons, animals, petitioners, and more—have brought him international recognition.

The production of videogames is a lot like the movies: in the same way that a film like Rachel Perkins’ Bran Nue Dae can hold its own against James Cameron’s Avatar, for every Guitar Hero or Grand Theft Auto that’s released there’s a World of Goo.
After winning multiple awards at the Independent Games Festival (IGF), World of Goo has been adapted for multiple platforms including PC and Nintendo Wii; Official Nintendo Magazine described it as “virtually flawless”. This is exactly why Think Services, producer of Game Developer magazine and the Game Developers Conference, came up with the IGF in the first place – to encourage innovation in game production and to recognise the best indie developers in the world.

You’ve probably heard that on Thursday, January 28, the Festival will dispatch eight filmmakers and their films to cities across the country to expand the celebration of indie film that has taken place for years in Park City. Well, we too, in Park City will be celebrating this expansion of the Festival, and by extension the importance of creating a dialogue around the arts in this country.

Media Preview Thursday, October 29, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present, the first major museum exhibition to acknowledge photographers for their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock and roll, will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum from October 30, 2009, through January 31, 2010. The exhibition is curated by photographic historian and author Gail Buckland and features many rare and never-before-exhibited photographs.

Submissions now open for the 2010 Wisconsin Film Festival. Deadlines in December 2009.
Until the full 2010 site is available, look for useful information about the festival on the 2009 site, such as theaters, basic ticket information, and the 2009 film guide. The 2009 festival showed 199 films at ten theaters, with an attendance of 32,645 in four days.
