Have you ever seen a person getting a really great deal out of a tight business negotiation in front of your own eyes? I have, and I am sure most of people have experienced it too.
That person didn’t even have to raise his voice or even did something that maybe looked supernatural. It was as if the vendor was giving it gladly to him and even add some more features into the deal. Isn’t it nice to have that kind of talent too?
So, I went to him and ask what’s the secret behind all that charisma. Here’s the breakdown of my conversation with him.
Before you try to apply any of the bargaining principles, one thing you must understand and keep reminding yourself all the time is that we – as human – are naturally generous being. By having this positive portrayal of the opposite party, we can now enter the negotiation with a calm mind.
On the other hand, we also need to purify our intention. Our motivation is not to crushed the opposite party and stripped off all of his profit margin, but to invite the person to get involved and brainstorm a win-win situation.

A great bargaining attitude is:
- respectful
- honest
- straightforward
- objective instead of subjective
- solution oriented

5 ways to activate your bargaining super power:
- Clearly communicate your specific needs. Letting know the other party of a desired result invites an open discussion to solve the problem. This includes being transparent of other aspects as well, such as shortcomings, or even strengths.
- Understand what is offered to you. Have attention to detail, analyze and carefully review the opposite party’s proposal.
- Asking the right questions. Clarify confusions and misunderstanding issues to make sure both parties are on the same page.
- Striving for the right price without sacrificing quality. Reduce Scope of Work when price reduction is needed. It’s better to have a small list of great products instead of a large number of mediocre outputs.
- Establishing a healthy relationship. Nourish a long term relationship that is rooted deep in trust and fruitfully beneficial. Apply the golden rule of “treating others like you want to be treated” principle; this ensures growth on both sides.
